Lady Vengeance serves as a hinge between the trilogy and Park’s more recent films. The film reinvents itself as Lee’s plan unfolds, going from crime drama to revenge noir, and eventually landing on a structure a la 12 Angry Men as the victims of a hideous crime parse the ends and means of violence and justice. But Lee is innocent (of that crime at least) and the first thing she wants to do with her freedom is take sadistic revenge on the real killer. The lady of the title is Lee Geum-ja, who has just been released from prison where she served 13 years for the murder of a little boy. Vengeance and noted for the iconic second installment, Oldboy. Lady Vengeance caps off Park’s unofficial trilogy of revenge dramas set in Korea, starting with the oft-overlooked Sympathy for Mr. His films explore the burden and the cost of revenge as well as its visceral appeal. Unlike other directors fascinated by vengeance and brutality, your Quentin Tarantinos and your Clint Eastwoods, Park isn’t primarily invested in hideous spectacle. But when Park came up in the 2000s, he drew from a different color on the storytelling palette: blood-red revenge. I know that I want to do something completely different in 10 years.” Billie Marten plays at 8 p.m. I don’t want to…but I’m very much learning to be in the present. “I was assuming that I would stay, and have been told regularly, that I am that late teen/early 20s character, and once you get labeled that I think it’s really easy to have that association in your mind,” says Marten. Breaking out of the I-was-discovered-on-the-internet-and-signed-as-a-teen mold is imperative for Marten, even as the industry tries to keep her in that box. I didn’t know he was paid to be Bowie.” Now older and much wiser, Marten released her fourth studio album, Drop Cherries, in April, and is currently touring the U.S., which will include a show at Union Stage on June 24. “I thought it was just a thing that people do. “From the accidental YouTube video, which was genuinely an accident, up until signing, I still didn’t really understand how music was a job,” Marten says. Since she was still a teenager, Marten couldn’t wrap her head around the reality that being a musician was now her profession. She was so nervous that she broke a champagne glass (she had never held one before) and was more concerned about an exam at school the next day. “I do remember sitting in that big glass room at Sony and lots of people peering over you with a pen,” Marten tells City Paper, recalling the moment when she signed her contract. Marten went viral on YouTube more than 10 years ago, and record companies soon came knocking at her door. Even Weezer’s frontman Rivers Cuomo, in a recent interview with Flea on the podcast This Little Light, admitted the amount of material they’ve released over the past 30 years might be a bit much. It’s quite a feat for a band that seemed like they were over after their second album, Pinkerton, released in Sept. Whether you’re old enough to remember when the brilliant music video for “ Buddy Holly” received an absurd amount of airplay on MTV or were introduced to the band by the classic “Weezer” SNL sketch, it’s sort of astonishing that they’re now 15 albums into their career.
